Valentine's Day

Principal and Vice-Principal's
Message for February,

Karen Spragg and Amy Doherty

We have been very fortunate so far this winter to have experienced  very few snow days.  Below are some safety tips from the Bus Consortium about safe behavior when waiting for the bus.  More than half of the behavior issues that administration deal with are bussing related.  The bus is one area where school staff are not visible, and behavior is monitored by the bus driver while he/she is also driving the bus.   Please reinforce with your children that every time they make a poor choice on a bus and therefore draw the attention of the driver, they are putting every student at risk.

Our lost and found is exploding at Saugeen Central.  If you are in town during the day, stop in at the office and go through items to see if a mitt or boot  belongs to your child.

As indicated in the letter sent out by Alana Murray, the director of education, First Term Report Cards will not be sent home this year due to work action.   If you have any questions, regarding your child’s progress, you are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a time to discuss your concerns.

Winter School Bus Safety Tips:
-Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.
-Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening.
-Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice
-Dress properly. Winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.
-Don´t play in the snow while waiting for the bus. Don´t throw snowballs at the bus or anyone else.
-Don´t slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street. You could slide under the wheel of the bus and get hurt.
-Don´t push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.
-Hands should be kept to yourself at all times while riding on the bus. Fighting and picking on others creates a dangerous bus ride.

Work Action Updates:

Full Withdrawal of Services:  The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) have jointly announced a province wide one-day full withdrawal of services on Friday, February 21, 2020.

A one-day full withdrawal of services by both ETFO and OSSTF members will significantly impact the operation of both our elementary and secondary schools, including our ability to ensure the safety and well-being of our students.

As a result, ALL ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS in Bluewater District School Board will be closed to students on Friday, February 21, 2020.

First Term Report Card Update:  Due to the current provincial labour action involving the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), we regret to inform you that it will not be possible for term one elementary report cards to be completed.
Term one report cards reflect the student’s midyear progress based on the work completed in the first half of the school year.

We recognize that parents/guardians value receiving ongoing information about their children’s progress. As always, you are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher should you have any questions about how your child is progressing at school.

A letter will be placed in your child’s Ontario Student Record (OSR), stating that a report card for term one February 2020 was not completed due to job action.

Parents/guardians are our valued education partners. We will continue to review this situation and share further information with you as labour negotiations progress. You may also wish to monitor our board’s Facebook and Twitter pages, and the following web page for ongoing labour updates: www.bwdsb.on.ca/parents/Labour_Updates

Other Work Action:  ALL Field Trips have been postponed except for Swim to Survive (grade 3).  If the Field Trip can be rebooked after sanctions have ended, teachers will contact parents, letting you know the new date.  As of right now, the school will not endeavor to reimburse parents for field trips that have already been booked.  As soon as we have confirmation that a field trip cannot be rebooked, the school will reimburse parents.

We recognize that these are very challenging times.  I want to assure you that we are communicating information to you as soon as we receive it.  Unions have an obligation when fully withdrawing services to inform the board 5 days prior to strike action; however, it takes the board time to facilitate communication to all its stakeholders.  As soon as I receive letters and/or information, I am immediately going to my computer and forwarding that information to parents through Twitter, Email (School Messenger), and Facebook; in addition to placing information on the website.

We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding!

MilkThinking of making a donation to our school?

Consider purchasing a milk card to donate to a student in need.  Parents will notice that when they log into School Cash Online that there is an option to “Donate a Card.”  When a payment is made to this item, the school is notified and we can then issue a milk card to a student who might not otherwise be able to participate in our milk program.

Thank you in advance for considering this option.
