October, 2020

Illustration Of Colorful Autumn Leaves.pngThanksgiving is right around the corner.  We experienced a successful start to the school year in spite of the challenges.  Our numbers are down by about 10% due to online learning and home schooling and there will therefore be adjustments in class configurations and staffing.  For those classes where there will be a change, parents will be contacted at the end of this week or the beginning of next.

Halloween is also just around the corner.  A reminder that parades and food will not be permitted this due to COVID-19 restrictions.  If you would like your child to have an extra treat on October 30, the last day of school before Halloween, kindly pack it in their lunch.

As we look ahead, Progress Reports will go home on November 20 and Parent/Teacher Interviews will take place on November 26 (evening) and November 27 (morning).  More information about the format of these interviews will be released closer to the middle of November.

Changes in entry Gate to minimize Traffic and Student Congestion:

From the parent parking lot, please note that students in grades 2-6 will now be entering the school/playground at the gate near the track and students in grades JK-1 will enter at the gate next to the school.  There will be lots of signage to support this change.

A reminder that there are access points/gates for students off of Centennial and Pierson Street.  Students may also access the playground through the gate off of the staff parking lot.

Please note that parents will not longer be allowed on school property or in the school unless there is an emergency due to regulations from Public Health.

What happens if my child is sick at school?

1. If a child develops a symptom of COVID while at school, they will be removed from their class and moved to a quiet space to wait for pick up. The quiet space will be the Accessible Washroom, which is down the hallway across from the Music Room. The child will be monitored by staff on an ongoing basis until an adult arrives to pick them up.

2. Parents will be contacted immediately to come and pick up the child. It is important that every family have a plan for pick up for sick children. We will not be able to send a sick child on the bus.

3. When parents arrive at the school to pick up a sick child, they will need to come to the front door and push the buzzer, or text into the school office to let staff know they have arrived. Staff will bring the child to the front door, unless for some reason we feel that a parent needs to come in to gather the child.

4.  Any staff interacting closely with a sick child will have on full PPE, not just a mask. This is to ensure safety of that staff member, as well as any other student or staff that person interacts with for the rest of the day. We know that gowns, gloves, masks and face shields may be intimidating for children. We will do our best to continue to be as friendly and caring as possible so we don't frighten our sick children.

5.  It will be important for all families to complete the COVID self assessment every day before children leave for school. If a child is experiencing even one COVID symptom, they must stay home. Hopefully this will help avoid emergency calls home to come and pick up a child.

6.  The school is required to report to Public Health if a child or staff member is experiencing ONE COVID SYMPTOM.  Please not that staff are required to complete the self assessment as well and will also be required to stay home if they are experiencing symptoms of COVID.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Spragg ( or Mrs. Doherty (
